Came to Australia from Scotland in 1863 and became a civil engineer with the Queensland Roads Department. Took up residence at Bowen, and was Chief Draftsman for the Engineer of Roads, Northern District, 1864-1865. Superintendent of Works for the Kennedy District, later Roads Surveyor of the Northern District (of Queensland).
